Ford Ranger joins Eyewitness News’ reporting fleet in South Africa

According to Ford’s South African announcement dated 23 October 2026, four Ranger XLT vehicles will support the field work of the Eyewitness News (EWN) reporting team. The partnership’s initial assignment is coverage of the 2026 local government elections. The vehicles are also expected to remain in news operations after the election period.

Four double-cab Rangers

The announcement lists two 4×4 and two 4×2 Ranger XLT 2.0 double cabs. Formal 4×4 training is also planned for the EWN team. This is a statement about reporting operations in South Africa, rather than a fleet handover in Türkiye or an announcement of a new trim level for that market.

The article published by Ford was written by Primedia’s corporate affairs executive, Moshoeshoe Monare. Its assessment of the partnership should therefore be read as the organisation’s own account. It states that EWN will retain editorial control. Vehicle support does not mean the resulting reporting constitutes an independent car test.

A connection with Silverton

The announcement also highlights Ranger production at the Silverton plant in Pretoria. The cover image is a real production-line photograph supplied in Ford’s same publication. It shows Rangers being built; we are not presenting it as a photograph of a handover ceremony to EWN. The source does not separately give a date for a particular ceremony.

Having different drivetrains in a field-reporting fleet may allow vehicles to be chosen according to their assignments. However, the statement provides no route-specific allocations, annual mileage targets or operating-cost calculations. There is therefore insufficient information to describe the four vehicles’ contribution as a quantified saving or efficiency improvement.

What does this mean for commercial users?

The news value lies in a pick-up being used for professional field work. For anyone assessing a fleet purchase, a shared model name alone is not enough for a useful comparison. Drivetrain, cab configuration, actual load requirements and driver training need to match the specific job. The planned training is a notable detail in that context.

This article is not a long-term durability test or vehicle selection recommendation. Fleet results will depend on information released after the vehicles enter service. We are not taking fuel consumption, payload or Turkish pricing figures from other versions and attributing them to these vehicles when Ford’s statement does not provide them.
